The Graduate Program in Materials Science and Engineering was recommended in the second semester of 2010 with a grade of 3 by CAPES, officially beginning its activities in the second semester of 2011. In November 2021, CAPES approved the merger between the Graduate Program in Materials Science and Engineering (PPGCEM) at the Federal University of Alfenas (UNIFAL) and the Graduate Program in Materials for Engineering (PPGME) at the Federal University of Itajubá (UNIFEI). This resulted in the creation of a new Graduate Program in Materials Science and Engineering (PPGCEM) UNIFEI/UNIFAL. Consequently, our program now offers both Master’s and Doctoral degrees.

The new program features a single area of concentration, titled “Materials Science and Engineering,” along with seven research lines. This merger has also fostered collaboration among faculty members and strengthened research partnerships between professors from both institutions, which are well recognized in the academic and scientific community.

Area of Concentration: Materials Science and Engineering

This field of knowledge falls within the broader area of Materials Science and Engineering, classified by CAPES under the Engineering-II category. The area of concentration is based on three fundamental pillars: structure, properties, and processing, aiming at innovation, applications, and performance evaluation of materials. The program seeks to train Master’s and Ph.D. graduates capable of conducting scientific and technological research by mastering concepts and methodological techniques applied to problem-solving, as well as the development and characterization of polymeric, metallic, ceramic, and composite materials.
